Portobello Community Centre is run by a small local charity called Portobello Community Forum. The charity’s goal is to uplift, inspire, and support the people of Portobello by backing local community-led initiatives and making the most of new opportunities. We’re dedicated to offering fun and accessible activities at the Portobello Community Centre and other local spaces. We’re always working to secure funding, whether on our own or through partnerships, to keep these projects going strong. The charity is all about creating a lasting hub of community action, bringing together residents, local groups, and agencies to make Portobello an even better place for everyone.
Below are some of the great events and activities we’ve organised and been involved with on Portobello!

2024’s Portobello Gala was a lively celebration that transformed Manygates Park into a hub of activities, local entertainment, inflatables and stalls. Attendees enjoyed hands-on activities like arts and crafts, while local performers delivered live music and dance. Families enjoyed games, a climbing wall, bucking bronco and inflatables as well as face painting, and raffles. The Gala fostered a strong sense of community, bringing people from all backgrounds together to celebrate local culture and build connections.

Portobello Gala in 2023 brought energy and excitement with the sounds of African drumming, children playing, and vibrant music brightening a rainy day. Originally set to take place at Castle Grove Park (known locally as Manygates Park), the event was moved to Portobello Community Centre and The Rainbow Hub due to the weather. Organised by Portobello Community Forum and supported by Wakefield Council’s Cultural Grant, the gala offered a wide variety of activities, including crafts, live animal displays, balloon modelling, a magician, and live entertainment.
