About Us

History

Portobello Community Centre is managed by a small charity called Portobello Community Forum (PCF).

Curious how we got here? Here’s a bit of our backstory:

It all started back in 2005 with the fabulous Sally Martin, a local church leader, and members from Sandal Magna Parish and other nearby churches. By 2008, Sally and her team took over the reins of Portobello Community Centre as it was going into a state of disrepair and they wanted to save the building for the community.

That same year, Wakefield District Housing (WDH) gave the local housing a makeover. PCF jumped in and rallied WDH, Keepmoat, and Groundwork to pitch in and revamp the (nearly forgotten) community centre. Thanks to their hard work, the place got a fresh start!

In 2011, we made it official and became a registered charity – Portobello Community Forum.

Who’s running the Centre now?

Fast forward to 2020, and Sally handed the baton over to Sarah Cutts, our current manager. With years of management and community work under her belt – and her kids having attended local schools like Castle Grove, Sandal Castle Primary, and Kettlethorpe High – Sarah knows this area like the back of her hand and lots of the families too!

The Trustees

We’re also backed by an awesome team of trustees, including our Chair, Rev Hannah Smith (vicar at St Helen’s), Ruth McCallum (our Treasurer, with loads of charity work experience), local businessman David Boulton, and Portobello residents Pip Lockhart and Sarah Coates. Together, they help us keep the good stuff going!

Everyone Welcome!

Though PCF’s roots are in Christian values, we’re all about being inclusive. Whatever your faith (or no faith), sexuality, or gender identity – everyone is welcome. You’ll always find a place here where you’re respected, valued, and part of the family!

Portobello Annual Gala

PCF are also the main organisers of Portobello Gala, fundraising year-round to put on a free and fun day in Manygates Park for the whole community. The Gala is the highlight of the year! It’s a day filled with fun, laughter, and activities for everyone in the community. Whether you’re in the mood for live music, food stalls, games, or simply catching up with friends and neighbours, the Gala has it all. From bouncy castles to local crafts, face painting to community performances, there’s something for every age to enjoy. It’s the perfect chance to come together, celebrate, and show off the incredible spirit of Portobello. If you want to be involved email infopcfwakefield@gmail.com.
